harddrive was working now gives error opening

i have wd 1tb external was working great on my wii for wiimc and games still works for my games now doesnt work for wiimc gives error opening drive just modded another wii and this wii does the same thing so its something with my drive but i have no clue what or how to get it to work again and i used my everyday for my mediacenter so would be a great help if i could get this fixed
