Hi folks,
I just made a back-up of my DVD, it came out as about 6GB. I moved it accross to my portable HDD connected to the wii. WiiMC played it perfectly for a while then froze so I had to reset the wii. Then it froze again 5mins later.
I’m thinking 6GB is just too big for it, is this right?
What’s a good size to compress movies to? Perhaps in GB per hour.
I was also wondering if I should have converted it to another file format and codec – folders with various VOBs etc are a bit confusing for the family 🙂 and single files are just so much neater.
So basically what should I convert DVDs to and what size to aim for. I have plenty of space so I’m looking for quality over size.

Any suggestions on a prog to convert DVD to XVid?
I have Nero but I can never find what I need on that darn prog 🙂

So does everyone use this format? I’ve heard of it but don’t know much about it.
It seems a lot smaller to me… 6GB down to 700MB? I don’t need to compress that much.

So basically can WiiMC play larger, better quality files than this reliably? Or is that the best quality I can expect?
Cheers

July 30, 2011 at 1:03 pm #29311KCMTParticipantThanks again.
But I’m not talking about HD, I’m talking about PAL DVDs which are 720×576.
So reducing to 624×352 is quite a major downgrade.
I think Wiis can kind of play off DVD so they must be able to handle a higher res than 624×352, can’t they?
July 30, 2011 at 4:03 pm #29312rodriesKeymasterSure, the Wii can handle DVD video at 720×576 just fine.
August 1, 2011 at 4:21 pm #29313KCMTParticipantThanks,
But I’m still not sure on the best format.
The 6GB DVD file froze. I guess I could shrink it but I don’t know what size and a single file would be so much more convinient.
The Xvid sounds good, and everyone raves about it but it seems a lot smaller to me.
Is there a happy medium?
