First of all, thanks to Tantric and everyone else involved in the development of WiiMC for all your efforts and for providing WiiMC as a FLOSS project.

Second of all, I’d like to ask for some support upon SMB (network shares) in WiiMC 1.2.0. Basically, I can’t get it to work at all and unfortunately WiiMC doesn’t provide any detailed information about connection failure, i.e. it just doesn’t connect. My setup is an Ubuntu 11.10 server running Samba 3.5.11, providing some share to the LAN at 192.168.1.254, port 445 (and 139) – this actually is the default Samba config. So far, every client I have in my LAN (Ubuntu 10.10, Android 3.2 and Mac OSX 10.6.8) connects to before mentioned Ubuntu server without any troubles but WiiMC. I use security=User authentication with my primary UNIX account, i.e. I don’t provide any guest login for security reasons.

So far, so good … There are several threads in the forums about SMB issues already and I gathered the information (from Tantric actually) that WiiMC uses NTLMv1 client authentication on port 445, i.e. that’s the requirement for a successful SMB connection of WiiMC as a client. Unfortunately, after deeper investigation, I found out that unless both requirement are already met at Ubuntu server (NTLMv1 AND port 445, both are default in Samba 3.5.11), WiiMC is still unable to connect.

Attached is /etc/samba/smb.conf (testparm-v). Most notably the configuration options “ntlm auth = yes” and “smb ports = 445 139”. I even allowed port 445 (only) for testing purposes without any more luck in WiiMC connection.

    ruf@eeego:~$ testparm -v

All that said, may you please have a look at described issue and point me into the right direction, i.e. make WiiMC-Music and -Video happen in our living room? I’m unfortunately out of ideas.

    Thanks a lot in advance,
    R

YES!!! I actually got it to work, i.e. found a workaround after investigating the SMB logs at my Ubuntu server. It seems that the issue is related to name resolution/Netbios and, that said, I’m still looking for a better/smoother solution to the problem but here is what I did so far …

I configured my DHCP server to assign a fixed IP (in my case 192.168.1.39) to my Wii console and entered that very IP with corresponding hostname (in my case Wii) of the Wii console to /etc/hosts at my Ubuntu server and it started working. Love it!

    192.168.1.39 Wii

Glad that you got it working 🙂
