I don’t know what to do to initialize your device. I’m going to do a special usb test only for you, testing a lot of combinations. I’ll ping you when I finish that test.

Here is the log of a WD My Passport Essential 2.5″ 500GB. WiiMC 1.1.1 mounts it most ot the time but playback fails after few minutes (see http://www.wiimc.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=886#p3743). The log is similar to the one of the LeahCim post, with an error in the wake-up test.

    System: Wii 4.2e, IOS58 (forwarder/HBC 1.0.8)
HDD: Western Digital My Passport Essential 2.5″ 500GB, 465GB NTFS partition + 615MB Factory UDF partition (the second one is hidden in wiimc)

New test, with wake up test fixed and a new method added.
    Please test it.

I have used up to 4 different hard drives to no avail.

Please execute usb test app : http://www.wiimc.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1033
In that thread you’ll find some wiimc betas, you can try to use them
Are you executing wiimc from the channel?
We need to update the channel when we have enough usb logs to improve usbstorage

With this beta version of WiiMC, I have to unplug my external hard drive first, and I reconnect it to be recognized. But it works fine.

With this beta version of WiiMC, I have a loading screen at startup of WiiMC, I hear my hard drive reboot but it is not recognized. It is not recognized either if I disconnect and reconnect I.

EDIT : I use the usb 2.0 on my wii. I just tested my hard drive by plugging it into the USB 1.0 port (top) and is then recognized by WiiMC.

EDIT2 : My hard drive is recognized by randomly WiiMC (on the port usb 2.0 or 1.0) …

    Both ports are usb2
loading screen? are you launching wiimc from the channel? Do you have the wiimc installed in the usb or in the sd?
The channel is not updated with last usb changes.
All tests have to be done using HBC & sd if possible
When all problems are fixed then a new channel will be created

As requested, here the new results.

Your device is not detected by the wii
    USB_GetDeviceList. device_count: 0
    Are you using power supply?
When you plug your device the wii can’t detect it, I’ve only seen this when an usb device need an external power supply

is working with previuos wiimc version?
Your device has 2 logical units (GetMaxLUN: 2) maybe we need to mount the second logical unit instead the first one.

Your 2.5HDD log is strange. Try again please, be sure to switch off & on when unplug, to reset your device, and wait about 10 secs before press A to be sure your device is up & spininng

I’ve got a Western Digital MyBook Essential 3TB drive. If I open WiiMC with with it plugged in, WiiMC crashes (DSI Exception). The same goes for the usb test app. I’m not sure what the exact error is since it only stays up for a second. I’m happy to provide more info or try any suggestions.

Weird, try to reinstall ios58 (http://wiibrew.org/wiki/IOS58_Installer) then try to reinstall hbc to use that ios
Now try the usb test app

The samba server is Visa Home Premium x64. I’ll do some searching to see if I can find the timeout value. I didn’t think of that before because i never had a problem from my other windows PC’s that use the same share.. But I bet the other windows PC’s send some kind of keep alive signal or something.

I’ll do some searching. I bet there is a registry value for the timeout, and i bet it’s set at 60 seconds right now.

If I don’t figure it out, i’ll post back with a wireshark log. If I find the timeout value, I’ll post it here in case others have this issue in the future.

    Thanks for the tip.

I guess you want to say Vista. It’s very strange, windows samba server works pretty fine because we test smb client with windows, maybe is a router problem, I had to change my wifi router because my wii didn’t like it and had a lot of disconnections

Try to change channel & fix the ip address in the wii, there is a problem with some dhcp servers, something about DHCP NAK broadcast read this: http://code.google.com/p/mplayer-ce/issues/detail?id=582

If the problem is fixed then is a network problem in HBC and will be fixed in the next HBC

Most of my videos are encoded in xvid, and for many of them the rewind command goes back 10-15 seconds even though my rewind/fast forward settings are set to 5. Would be great to see this addressed.

Not possible, depend on index and codec, to avoid malformed images

Please test this usb_test.dol program to debug your problem.
You can test 3 methods unplugging & plugging device and selecting another method, on exit a log will be generate in sd:/log_usb.txt please paste log here or in pastie.org if the log is big
    http://www.wiimc.org/files/usb_test.dol

Also I’ve compiled wiimc using the last method (2) probably will work fine in your usb device but please post the logs from usb_test.dol
